News from the customs:
Gongbei Customs District had intercepted a precious animal product smuggling case at the beginning of this year, in which 76 Helmeted Hornbill skulls were found in an inward passenger’s luggage. The passenger, a Yu, was sentenced to 5 years in prison and fined RMB 20,000 a few days ago.
On January 19, a passenger Yu entered through Gongbei Port in Zhuhai, declaring nothing to the customs. However, customs officers noticed that there was something wrong with Yu’s luggage. On opening the suitcase, customs officers found 76 items (with a weight of 7.7 kilograms) that looked much alike Helmeted Hornbill casque. Later, the items seized were confirmed by South China Detection Center of Wildlife as Helmeted Hornbill skulls.
The Helmeted Hornbill is a very large bird in the hornbill family with a casque-like skull. Helmeted Hornbill is evaluated as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is listed on Appendix Ⅰof Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Helmeted Hornbill is under State Ⅱ protection in China.
